final major project

some visual experimentation i have done this week in my sketchbook. the idea was then generated that i should play with these sentences in series of images (in 3’s). i am going to play with their meaning, working as an illustrator should: “going through something to become something else”. i need to work along the ideas of “things becoming clearer”, for ex. just for a split second you might believe the fact your parent tells you, but things become clearer over time. i have been playing with the legibility of words, nonsense, and it not making any sense through the first 2 images (my fragmenting the text or making it disappear), and then in the 3rd it will become a clear printed text image (as a whole). somehow i much preferred the final image just to be left as a whole ... need to talk to my tutor!

 wormies & teethies`

today was spent in the studio. we had a book making workshop and we were taught how to make zig zag books. i was really impressed with my outcome and how professional they all looked!

i then spent a looooooot of time  discussing my next steps for my final piece. my visual experimentation had worked well, and the tutors enjoyed it so i was very happy! what im trying to say (mainly through my visual experimentation) is that cautionary advice is wrong. in the sense that the advice we are given (that have consequences) are completely ridiculous and banal. even though my experimentations had the intention to abstract the message so much, it was raised that for my final piece i need to try and convey the message more clear. the italian artist, bruno munari once said that the “perfect poster is a big dot” and that is exactly what i want to achieve.

i have decided to create 3 large posters (possibly printed on newspaper) of 3 of my different visual experimentations. the printed mono print text will be clearly written out underneath the image but UPSIDE DOWN. i am literally turning the idea of cautionary tales on its head, and making the audience question it. accompanying it will be small “business”-like cards (which i want the viewers to take away with them). they will have folds on them which fold out to reveal the cautionary tale message inside. on the front i want them to have the image from the print, and then another linked to it on the back.
my next steps: as the apple pip and thumb image is finalised i need to work more on the building page. i should play more with perspective and take pictures of what buildings actually look like. i will then plan out my prints on photoshop and get them ready to be printed!

tate britain, final major project

so much has been happening, and all so quickly ...

i had my work in progress presentation. it went pretty well but it annoyingly took up most of the day and i had to do my portfolio with fiona in the afternoon.apparently the way i displayed my questionnaires on the wall reminded people of susan hiller’s exhibition (the memorial wall), in the way that she displayed things at monuments. that its just there. you almost done see it, but it has such a presence. this then led onto the discussion of how i could play with engraving things. as in, special items which have the instructions chizelled onto them, for example gravestones, spoons, napkin rings, bracelets, keys. i just need to play around now with my gathered information, putting it into context.
i was told not to stay too far away from drawing, which i agree with as i really love to draw. i have gathered all my materials for a day of monoprinting (tomorrow). i am going to illustrate the information that i have gathered in single images. i want to experiment a bit with the words as well.
this also then led onto the work of tom phillips. http://www.humument.com. he went to camberwell and worked a lot with words, books, and played a lot with the connection between words and pulling them out of context through visual experimentation. i was also told to carry on with the newspaper work. possibly print your own cautionary tales onto the newspaper? overall i thought it was quite handy to have had this opportunity to discuss my progress and discover new ways of taking my project forward.

crazy crazy monoprint day. i really enjoyed it and got into it quite easily. i produced 50 monoprints in that style. and will probably finish the whole packet (100) by the end of the weekend! very excited. i think that my pure type ones worked slightly better than the merging of text and image.

i showed my tutor fiona my monoprints that i have been working on. i had quite positive feedback, mainly of the pure type ones, as when i combined images and text together, i should have just left out the text. we decided on “subverting” everything. i am planning on mixing up the sentences, by putting the beginnings with different endings, and then to play with the idea of “perfect type” on monoprints. i am going to print out a type face on tracing paper and then re print the sentences this weekend using the “perfect type” letter forms. theres something interesting about trying to strive for perfect type through a monoprint…after that i want to play with the idea of “predicting the future” of cautionary tales. i originally wanted to do something along those lines … asking people what would you tell your children (if you had children) to be cautious of? today i asked people “what advice would you tell your 10 year old self?” some of the feedback i received included “be nice to everyone”, “don’t be bossy”, “read some more books to be intelligent”. (photo above) i also need to look at a book that covered the themes of “what i would tell my 16 year old self”. all i know is that elton john wrote something in it! so i must do more research into that. then i should go to the library as well next week. it seems as though my project is going to work out as being produced in book form. i should find the book “how to fold” in the library and begin experimenting.

glasgow museum of modern art, cca, final major project

this weekend i went to glasgow! i visited the museum of modern art (goma) and the cca.

we are now into our 3rd week of the fmp! everything is going by ridiculously fast. today has been spent working over newspapers. i have been collecting them like crazy (2 papers a day) and i have been blocking out the “unimportant” news stories and leaving stories that tell us things to be cautious about. i am finding it quite therapeutic! im doing it with acrylic paint as i have discovered that it is the only material that doesnt seep through too much onto the other side, and it is also quite quick to do. all the pens i experimented with just sank through onto the next side, which ruined the effect i was going for - of just highlighting certain articles.

i was quite nervous over the weekend as to how my project is going, but i think i am getting somewhere by working with newspapers. this week i want to experiment with mono prints (with the information that i gathered from my questionnaires), on different types of paper and weights.
my work in progress presentation is tomorrow. this will give me the opportunity to gather back into my group and tutor that i gave my “ideas pitch” to and to show them my progress. i will get quite detailed advice and feedback that will help my develop my work and make it move forward. i expect to write in my online reflective journal tomorrow as well. i am beginning to feel more comfortable writing online about my progress, and i think im selecting the right moments to document key changes in my ways of working.

final major project

here are a few of the examples i got from my questionnaire. i stuck half of them up on the wall in a grid!
